Jack Roosevelt Robinson(January 31, 1919 October 24, 1972) was an American professionalbaseballplayer who became the first African American to play inMajor League Baseball(MLB) in the modern era.[2]Robinson broke thebaseball color linewhen he started atfirst basefor theBrooklyn Dodgerson April 15, 1947.[3]When the Dodgers signed Robinson, it heralded the end ofracial segregationin professional baseball that had relegatedblack playersto theNegro leaguessince the 1880s.[4]Robinson was inducted into theBaseball Hall of Famein1962.[5]

During his 10-year MLB career, Robinson won the inauguralRookie of the Year Awardin 1947, was anAll-Starfor six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954, and won theNational LeagueMost Valuable Player Awardin 1949the first black player so honored.[6][7]Robinson played in sixWorld Seriesand contributed to the Dodgers’1955 World Serieschampionship.
